2016 Join the Madness with ISU

Brooke Eppa
Feb 25, 2016 07:02 PM
It was our third annual Join the Madness event in Pocatello with Idaho State University accounting students. The competition was fierce with between 40 to 50 students who came out for the event.
Kimberlee Lystrup, an attendee (and winner of the women's bracket) at our first Join the Madness event several years ago, is now an accountant with us at Cooper Norman. She headed up the event this year, and was excited to be involved again.

"I think the Join the Madness is a great experience for students and staff alike. When I was at ISU it gave me a chance to meet more of the Cooper Norman team in the Pocatello office where, at the time, I was hoping to get a job. Now, as a staff member, it is a fun stress reliever from tax season and it provides us an opportunity to meet students in a more casual setting. At Cooper Norman we do all we can to support the university and build relationships with its faculty and its students even when it's not "recruiting season". I think that level of involvement stands out when we are recruiting and students get a good feel for the fit we are looking for in potential future CN team members."- Kimberlee Lystrup

Our winners- Cody Bunn and Jennifer Donaldson, and then a photo of three years of the women's pop shot bracket champs, Kimberlee, Brittney, and Jennifer

Cooper Norman Vision Day 2015

Brooke Eppa
Jun 25, 2015 11:06 AM
Our 2015 Vision Day was based on Steven Covey's 13 behaviors highlighted in his book Speed of Trust. These 13 behaviors are meant to increase trust. Covey states that our ability to trust some one is based on that individual's character (integrity) combined with their competence. Trust, integrity, and competence are important core values in our culture at Cooper Norman, and these were a great basis to a productive and meaningful Vision Day for all of us. We also had fun connecting with our fellow team members.
Pictures were taken by one of our very talented partners, Dan Packard, of our Idaho Falls office.

IRS Phone Scam Hitting Idaho

Brooke Eppa
Jan 26, 2015 05:43 PM
The scammers make unsolicited calls to taxpayers fraudulently claiming to be IRS officials.  They demand money be sent to them for unpaid taxes.  They want the taxes paid via prepaid debit cards or wire transfers.  There are also versions promising big refunds.

If you receive one of these calls please just hang up.  Do not divulge information or make payments over the phone. If you have a question about the status of your relationship with the IRS, please contact your accountant for clarification.

Please be aware that the IRS will never call to demand immediate payment, nor will the agency call about taxes owed without first having mailed you a bill.   The IRS will never demand that you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe.  The IRS will not require you to use a specific payment method for your taxes, such as a prepaid debit card, nor will they ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone.   The IRS will not threaten to bring in local police or other law-enforcement groups to have you arrested for not paying.

For anyone who is not represented by an accountant, or those wishing to speak directly with the IRS, you may call this number to find out if there really is an issue you need to resolve: 1.800.829.1040 (Be prepared to patiently wait for assistance.)

Big RED flags! Characteristics of the scam listed on the IRS website:

• Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
• Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim’s Social Security number.
• Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it’s the IRS calling.
• Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
• Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
• After threatening victims with jail time or driver’s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.

In addition to the Phone Scam, there are also scammers sending email requesting that you “update your IRS e-file” information.   The IRS has a list of scam on their website.    If something doesn’t sound right, it probably isn’t.  Please be cautious with your personal data.
